You’ll find Pico Grande and Pico Pequeno a bit more crowded. They break off an underwater rock cropping in front of the Diria Hotel. If you’re new to surfing, avoid these two waves as they are more crowded and you may hit the rocks.
North of the Picos, you’ll find plenty of waves breaking toward and in front of the Tamarindo Estuary.
You can also surf to the south in front of the moorings.
2. Playa Langosta
Just south of Tamarindo Beach, Playa Langosta is known for its consistent waves. It has a southern exposure so waves can get much bigger.
The main peak in front of the Langosta Estuary moves side to side and can be crowded with locals.
To its north, the waves break on rocky outcroppings. If you see someone surfing there, they are likely a local who knows the bottom features very well.
To the south of the main break, there is plenty of beach break in front of Hacienda Pinilla.
3. Playa Grande
If you’re seeking a bit of adventure, take a short boat ride across the estuary to Playa Grande (or just paddle across). This beach offers a more secluded and uncrowded surfing experience.
The first named break across the estuary is “Casitas.” It breaks on sand in front of Palm Beach Estates and is generally a bit bigger than Tamarindo.
Further up the beach, the main Playa Grande is in front of Taco Star and Hotel Las Tortugas. When the southern swells are large and orderly, it can hold double overhead waves and barrel.
On both sides of the main Playa Grande break, you’ll find plenty of peaks, so crowding is generally not a problem. When you are done at Playa Grande take the short trip to the more secluded beaches of Playa Ventana and Playa Carbon.
