Literally translated as “Large Beach,” Playa Grande is a quite large stretch of white sand. Since it is also the premier nesting ground of the endangered Leatherback Turtle, the stretch of land along the beach is also a national park called Parque Nacional Marino Las Baulas. Since biologists have concluded that artificial light interferes with the turtles’ nocturnal navigation and egg-laying, the government has generally restricted development so that it cannot be seen from the beach. The strip of foliage along the beach provides a natural buffer and gives the beach a pristine look. It is also generally much less crowded than Tamarindo Beach .
